October 2002: The SeaBurds, Grand Banks 37, visited El Tranquilo, ending up
their trip around the
Great Circle Loop,
or Great Loop, starting at Stuart, Florida thence up the ICW to the
Hudson River, thence Westward through the Erie Canal to the Great Lakes, thence
down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico. It was a great navigational feat,
second only to Vasco da Gama's rounding of The Cape of Good Hope. Bud and Sam joined Howie for the
trip from Tarpon Springs down the ICW to St. Pete Beach and El Tranquilo. Click
to enlarge the photo and see the "56" Pennant! Below are photos of Bud and
Howie when they were roommates at Bancroft Hall, U.S. Naval Academy Class of
1956.

2002: Kathy Dander joins Peirce Ferriter and Sam for a sail in the Gulf of
Mexico off St. Pete Beach.
Kathy is the daughter of their USNA-56 Classmate, Col. Vern Dander, who played on
the NAVY Football Team that beat Ole Miss in the 1955 Sugar Bowl. That team was
probably the best NAVY Team EVER! Kathy, the
image of her Dad shown at far right as a Midshipman, is now embarked on a career of her own in sports! She coaches
Fitness and Aerobics in the Boston Area. Her Dad is retired from USAF,
Lockheed-Martin, and now consults for the EPA. He and his wife Claire whom he met in
Tenth Grade now live in Littleton, Colorado south of Denver. An amateur historian, he authored
an account of the sinking of
USS West
Bridge, commanded by his Great Uncle, in World War I. He also has
contributed to the historical chronicles of his native
San Joaquin Valley,
California. For a good write-up on the Army-Navy football rivalry visit
100 Years of Tradition and Rivalry! In December 2002, Vern himself joined
Peirce and Sam for a pleasant sail in the Gulf. Special Note on the Midshipman
Cap that Vern is wearing: At graduation, Vern tossed it into the air. It was
retrieved by Classmate Pete Randrup's Mother. Later Pete returned it to Vern! The bottom photos were taken at
Sunday Brunch at the Don CeSar for
Vern's Birthday. Click to

Papaw for a sail with some decent wind for a change 16-18 knots. Kelly plans to
be an MD. Sean wants to go to either Air Force or Navy!

Sunday
22 October 2000: A great sail followed by a rescue of 8 survivors of a capsized
power boat. The wind was 21-23 knots out of the East. We beam reached going
North to Clearwater and back and maintained over 8 knots most of the way. At one
point we were clocking 8.4 knots! Coming back, we spotted life jackets to port
about 4 miles West of Johns Pass. We immediately furled the Main and Jib,
started the engine, and headed towards the scene of the survivors. Within 15
minutes we had all 8 aboard and calmed down. We raised Coast Guard, St.
Petersburg who sent an
Eckerd College
Search And Rescue Team. Below are thumbnails of the Sail and Rescue. Click

Boating Lesson: Too many
people in a small boat and too far offshore!! Stay in the Intracoastal Water!!
Pete Boer from Indiana is to be commended for ensuring that his passengers were
wearing life jackets.
After the boat capsized from shipping water over the gunwales, he kept his cool
and crew together in the water.
Because of the rather heavy chop, they were in the water about two hours before
we spotted them, although there were plenty of sports fishing boats going in and
out of Johns Pass. EC-SAR Rescue7 performed with great competence!! Read the
story that appeared in the Northwest Indiana
Times of 23 November 2000.
